Oglala Lakota County School District

Student Assessments

District Assessments:  All students kindergarten through 12th grade take the NWEA MAP assessment in reading and in math.  This Measure of Academic Assessment helps the schools provide appropriate instruction for students.  It takes about 30 minutes for the math assessment and about 30 minutes for the reading assessment.

Students take the test 3 times each year as follows:

September 9th to 27th

January 14th to 31st

April 27th to May 15th

Results are printed individually for each student and reviewed with the student at the school.  Reports are sent home for parents to know the progress of their child.

Lakota Studies Assessments:  Students in Kindergarten through Eighth grade will have Lakota Language assessments at the beginning and end of the school year as follows:

September 9th to 27th

April 27th to May 15th

This assessment takes about 30 minutes per student.

State Assessments:  DUE TO COVID19, the state of South Dakota will not be requiring students to take the State tests in math, reading, and science for the 2020 school year.

Typically, the state of South Dakota requires all public schools to participate in three assessments each year.  Students in 3rd through 8th grade and 11th grade participate in the math and reading state assessment. This window takes place from March 30 to April 30, 2020 and compares individual student scores in reading and in math from year to year.  The state Science assessment will take place during the same window, but only 5th, 8th, and 11th-grade students will take this test.  The assessments are not timed but students are tested over a few days to prevent test fatigue.  Results from state reading and math assessment from April/May 2019 were sent home in the May report card letters.  Science assessment results were mailed home to parents in August for students who took the Science assessment in March..

Special Education Assessments:  All SPED assessments are determined by individual student plans.

English Language Learner Assessments:  Students identified as ELL learners have assessments to help identify their needs and growth.  Identified ELL students have completed the ACCESS assessment for the spring.

Home School Assessments:

DUE to COVID19, the state of South Dakota will not be requiring Exempt and Home School students to take the SAT 10 test.

Typically, exempt and home school students in 4th grade, 8th grade, and 11th grade can pick up their assessment books beginning March 25th.
